Hair Ice in Interior Alaska
A reader from Fairbanks, Chris Greenfield-Pastro, discovered a unique phenomenon in the boreal forest, which she called "hair ice".
She sent in photos of delicate white lashes of ice curving from woody debris and fungus on the forest floor.
- The "hair ice" strands were 10 times thinner than human hair.
- They dissolved into water when held in the palm of a hand.
Greenfield-Pastro performed research on the phenomenon after discovering it behind her house.
The author of the article also observed 28 separate examples of "hair ice" during a dog walk.
