The tradition of burial in cemeteries remains very strong among the Maltese, but year after year, more people are opting for cremation abroad.

In 2024, 145 Maltese were cremated outside the country, representing 3.5% of all deaths.

Conversely, sea burials have continued to decline, with only one carried out last year, down from twelve in 2019 as reported by TVM News.

These burials are conducted under the supervision of the Directorate for Environmental Health in a zone approximately five kilometres off the coast of Xgħajra.

A total of 4,181 deaths were registered in Malta last year, 148 more than the previous year, of which 74 were non-residents.
