Study Reveals Barriers and Enablers to Infant Abuse Prevention Programme ICON
A new study has examined the role of healthcare managers and frontline staff in delivering and sustaining the ICON infant abuse prevention programme across the NHS.
The study, led by NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West (ARC West), evaluated the ICON programme, which aims to reduce the risk of abusive head trauma (AHT) in infants.
- The ICON programme has been widely adopted in hospitals and primary care across the UK.
- Researchers conducted interviews and focus groups with 53 managers and healthcare professionals across 6 regions of England between October 2022 and April 2023.
The study's findings are published in BMC Public Health.
The research focused on the perspectives of those responsible for implementing ICON in practice, rather than parents and carers.
