Conservative Alberta MP Matt Jeneroux has announced his resignation from the House of Commons following days of speculation about a possible move to the governing Liberals. The decision comes amid an already turbulent week for the Conservative Party as its leadership seeks to maintain internal unity.
According to a letter obtained by the National Post, Jeneroux, who represents the Edmonton Riverbend riding, informed Conservative Party Whip Chris Warkentin on Thursday of his decision to step down at an unspecified date.
“It was not an easy decision, but it is, I believe, the right one,”
Jeneroux wrote in his letter, which did not include reasons for his sudden departure. He was first elected to Parliament in 2015 and expressed appreciation for colleagues across party lines.
“I admire the many remarkable individuals on both sides of the aisle,”
he added. Notably, his letter made little mention of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre.
This resignation follows another high-profile Conservative MP’s departure, marking the second in three days and adding pressure on Poilievre ahead of a leadership review scheduled for January.
Matt Jeneroux’s surprise resignation underscores internal challenges within the Conservative Party as it braces for a leadership review early next year.
