England coach Shaun Wane has announced two changes to his 19-man squad ahead of Saturday’s third and final Ashes Test against Australia. Hull KR winger Joe Burgess and Leeds Rhinos centre Harry Newman are set to make their first England appearances in this autumn’s series.
Burgess and Newman have been called up to replace injured Dom Young, who broke his foot during last week’s 14-4 defeat in the second Test, and Wigan Warriors star Jake Wardle. Burgess, originally from Wigan, will be making his England return after a decade, with his last cap coming in a 2015 series win over New Zealand. Newman appeared in England’s 2-0 series victory over Samoa last year.
Leigh Leopards forward Owen Trout and St Helens hooker Daryl Clark may be reconsidered for selection, having been the 18th and 19th men respectively last time. Meanwhile, John Bateman remains sidelined due to an ankle injury sustained before the second Test.
Australia has already secured the Ashes series by winning the previous two matches, but Wane emphasizes England’s motivation to finish strongly at a sold-out AMT Headingley stadium on Saturday afternoon.
“Of course, we are disappointed not to be going into this final game with the opportunity to win the Ashes, but the goal now is to come away from the series with a victory,” Wane said.
“We did a lot of good things last week, but ultimately, we need to be even better if we want to get a win this weekend.”
Shaun Wane refreshes England’s lineup as the team aims to end the Ashes series on a high despite Australia’s early victory.
