The Roadrunners are marking their 15th football season in 2025. As one of the newer FBS programs, UTSA has rapidly developed since its inception. The team began with a practice year in 2010 and competed as an FCS Independent in 2011 before joining the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in 2012.
In 2013, UTSA transitioned to Conference USA and became a full FBS member starting in 2014. The program set NCAA records for modern startups in 2011 by attracting 56,743 fans to their first game against Northeastern State and averaging 35,521 fans over six home games that season.
UTSA reached its first postseason in the 2016 New Mexico Bowl during its sixth season. The following year, they achieved a program milestone by defeating a Big 12 team for the first time, beating Baylor 17-10.
The Roadrunners made history in 2021 with a season-opening road victory over Illinois from the Big Ten Conference. They won their first conference championship after a 49-42 win against WKU and finished the season 12-2, including their third bowl appearance.
In 2022, they successfully defended their league title by defeating North Texas 48-27 and completed their third straight bowl game with an 11-3 record.
