China regulator kept in dark over Qualcomm, Autotalks deal

China Regulator Unaware of Qualcomm, Autotalks Deal

China's antitrust watchdog, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), was not informed by Qualcomm about the completion of its acquisition of Autotalks, a V2X technology provider.

The SAMR made this admission two days after announcing plans to launch an antitrust probe into the deal, which was completed in June 2025. The investigation will determine if the acquisition broke China's anti-monopoly laws.

In 2023, when Qualcomm initially agreed to buy Autotalks, the SAMR conducted an initial investigation and found evidence that the deal could eliminate or restrict competition. In March 2024, the SAMR submitted a written notice to Qualcomm, stating that the transaction would require approval.

However, Qualcomm then informed the SAMR that it would not be proceeding with the deal. Despite this, the acquisition was completed, prompting the SAMR to launch a probe.

The SAMR's investigation will shed more light on the deal and its potential impact on competition in the market.
