A weather system moving into the region is expected to bring mostly rain but could deliver the season’s first snowflakes as temperatures fall into the 30s, according to weather officials.
“It’s not a big deal,” said Birk. “But there might be slushy grass and walkways with less than an inch of flakes.”
Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 50s by Thursday, with showers and possible thunderstorms continuing through the night into Friday. Rain will likely return Saturday afternoon under mostly cloudy skies with highs near 50 degrees.
By early Sunday morning, temperatures may dip to around 35 degrees, allowing a light mix of rain and snow. Officials report a 90% chance of precipitation on Saturday.
Current conditions at O’Hare and Midway airports are partly cloudy with temperatures near 55 degrees. Winds range from 5 to 10 mph, with overnight gusts up to 20 mph expected. The National Weather Service reports that lake-effect snow could develop Sunday night through Monday night as temperatures linger in the 30s.
