Significant Updates on North Quays: Train Station, Bridge, and Clock Tower

Progress on the North Quays development in Waterford has become increasingly visible to the public. The Sustainable Transport Bridge, the new train station, and the South Quays Plaza surrounding the Clock Tower are all advancing steadily.

Train Station Progress

The front elevation of the new train station is now visible following the removal of scaffolding. The northern plaza, which will include bus and car drop-off points as well as access to the new South East Greenway, is also taking shape with ongoing curb and paving installations.

Structural work on the train station is expected to be completed in the coming months, including roofing, paving, rendering, and interior fit-out. However, significant mechanical and electrical work remains before completion.

“The station can only open once it passes through all the independent safety and compliance checks, and those will continue all through 2026 and into 2027,” said Senior Engineer Sean Dobbs.

The train station is expected to open in 2027 once all required checks are completed.

Sustainable Transport Bridge

The Sustainable Transport Bridge is now fully installed, and the opening spans are functioning correctly. Construction crews, led by BAM, are testing the spans regularly by opening and closing them.

In the upcoming months, the focus will shift to final details, including surfacing, installation of glass panels and railings, lighting, seating, and other architectural finishes.

Author’s Summary

The North Quays redevelopment is moving toward completion, with major works on the train station and bridge nearing final stages and full operations projected by 2027.
