The Met Office has responded to concerns about incoming snowfall and outlined what weather Britain can expect in the next few weeks.
Despite some reports suggesting that southern cities like London and Southampton might experience wintry conditions as temperatures drop and daylight shortens, the outlook is more restrained.
“At this stage, for the vast majority of people it looks unlikely,” said meteorologist Greg Dewhurst.
Snowfall is anticipated, but only on the highest Scottish peaks. Dewhurst explained that some snow is currently falling on the summits in the Cairngorms.
“At the moment, there is a little bit of snow falling over the Scottish mountains, so anyone in the Cairngorms could be seeing some on the summits up there,” he said.
These snow patches are expected to vanish quickly, with mild weather returning soon after.
“This weekend we could see temporary coverings of snow on the Scottish mountains, but by Sunday night and through to Monday, the whole of next week looks very mild,” Mr Dewhurst explained.
Forecasters also warned that the upcoming weekend weather will be highly changeable, indicating fluctuating conditions rather than sustained cold or snow.
The Met Office confirms snowfall will be brief and confined to Scottish peaks, with mild and variable weather expected across most of the UK in the week ahead.
