Officials are investigating an incident on the French Atlantic island of Île d’Oléron, where a man deliberately drove a car into pedestrians and cyclists, injuring at least nine people.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez arrived on the island following a request from the prime minister. He stated that the French anti-terror police are supporting the investigation in an observer role.
"The suspect shouted 'Allahu Akbar' when arrested, but it is too early to confirm if this was a terrorist act; the investigation must proceed thoroughly."
Nunez also noted the suspect acted alone and was not previously known to anti-terror authorities.
The island, a popular summer destination off France’s west coast, has a population of around 22,500 people.
This deliberate car attack on Île d’Oléron injured multiple people and is under thorough investigation, with anti-terror authorities involved but no confirmed link to terrorism yet.
