Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper issued a firm reminder following their 3-2 defeat against Nathan MacKinnon and the Colorado Avalanche during the 2025-26 NHL season.
After a strong start in the first period, the Lightning relaxed their effort, allowing the Avalanche to come back and claim the win in Denver. Tampa Bay had been on a five-game winning streak before facing Colorado, but the Avalanche ended that run decisively.
“It was good for a bit, and then we got in our own way. And when we get in our own way, it’s usually going to be tough for us,” Cooper said, according to NHL.com.
“It was unfortunate that [there were] untimely penalties. We took those tonight, but they were a better team for periods two and three. So, that was a little disappointing.”
Despite the tough loss on the road, the defeat should not be seen as discouraging for Cooper and the Lightning.
