New Toyota HiLux Leaked Ahead of Official Reveal

Toyota’s best-selling ute has been leaked online just hours before its official unveiling, showing a drastically new look for the next-generation model.

Images posted on Instagram by bfmsoficial were taken from a video originally published by Auto Societies before its embargo, but later removed. These previews confirm the HiLux’s significant update.

Design and Platform

The platform and cabin structure from the A- to C-pillars remain the same as the current model, but the front features a new design with slim headlights, a squared-off grille, and sharp edges. The rear end appears tougher, highlighted by a tailgate embossed with “TOYOTA”.

“As previously reported, its platform and cabin section from the A- to C-pillars are identical to the current model, however there’s an all-new face with slim headlights, a squared off-grille and angular edges, plus a tougher-looking rear end which includes a ‘TOYOTA’ stamped tailgate.”

Variants and Powertrain

Several versions of the new HiLux, known in Thailand as the HiLux Travo, have been spotted. These include the ‘Prerunner’, ‘Overland’, ‘4Trex’, and an electric version believed to be called the ‘Travo-e’.

Except for the electric variant, all models are powered by a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine. This engine is likely the same ‘1GD-FTV’ found in the Australian HiLux lineup.

Australian government approval documents have previously revealed this 2.8-litre turbo-diesel engine for the new HiLux.

Author's summary: The upcoming Toyota HiLux reveals a bold new design while retaining its proven platform and diesel powertrain, with new variants including an electric model hinting at future directions.
