Corey O’Connor, a Democrat and son of former Pittsburgh Mayor Bob O’Connor, was elected as Pittsburgh’s 62nd mayor. He previously served on the City Council for ten years and later as Allegheny County Controller.
In the race, O’Connor defeated Republican Tony Moreno, a retired city police officer who also ran for mayor in 2021. Pittsburgh has not had a Republican mayor since O’Connor’s grandfather’s generation.
Earlier this year, O’Connor beat incumbent Mayor Ed Gainey in the Democratic primary. The Associated Press declared O’Connor the winner at 8:26 p.m. on election night.
"We have a special announcement. Corey O'Connor has won."
This was announced to supporters gathered at the IBEW Local #5 hall, where cheers followed the declaration. Soon after, O’Connor addressed the crowd:
"I am humbled and honored by the great honor and privilege of serving as Pittsburgh's next mayor."
He also remembered his late parents:
"I'm sure Mom and Dad are happy somewhere tonight."
O’Connor added that following in his father’s footsteps was emotionally difficult:
"It's hard for me to talk about [following his father into office] tonight."
Corey O’Connor’s election continues his family’s political legacy, marking a significant win for Democrats in a predominantly Democratic city.
