A 43-year-old farmer from Thabazimbi has been arrested and charged with negligent handling of a firearm after his 11-year-old son accidentally shot a farmworker.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the incident occurred on Saturday before 6 am. The boy was shooting at guinea fowls when he accidentally discharged the firearm, hitting the farmworker in the upper left chest. The victim was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
The firearm and cartridge were confiscated as part of the ongoing investigation. Both the farmer and his son will appear in the Thabazimbi Magistrates' Court on Monday.
The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed concern over the incident and reiterated the importance of responsible firearm ownership.
