US passport support in Apple Wallet is a hugely important step

US Passport Support in Apple Wallet

US passport support in Apple Wallet is a significant step forward.

At WWDC25, it was announced that US passport support would be coming to Apple Wallet, although it has not yet arrived in iOS 26. However, Apple confirmed that it is on the way. An update to the Apple website indicated that it would be available by the end of the year, and Jennifer Bailey, Apple's VP of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, confirmed this in a conference keynote.

How it Works

The process will be similar to making an Apple Pay transaction. Users will tap their iPhone to a reader, and their digital passport information will be transmitted via NFC, similar to card details during a payment. The secure protocol used will allow the TSA system to verify the authenticity of the passport details.

Limitations

It is essential to understand the capabilities and limitations of the digital passport. Notably, it will not be possible to use it for international travel, which will still require a physical passport.

US passport support will work in much the same way as making an Apple Pay transaction.

Author's summary: Apple Wallet to add US passport support soon.
