Car manufacturer Mazda has showcased a microalgae-fuelled concept car that captures carbon dioxide emissions from exhaust fumes while being driven.
The Vision X-Coupe is designed to be powered by a plug-in hybrid system, featuring a two-rotor turbo engine, a motor, and a battery, along with carbon capture technology.
The technology works similarly to larger scale point-source carbon capture systems, such as those found in industrial sites.
The company plans to use a capture technology, possibly a solid sorbent-based system, to capture CO2 from tailpipe gases before storing it in a filter or cartridge for later disposal or recycling.
The vehicle was showcased at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 in Tokyo and remains a concept project for now.
