Spam Text Scammer Fined £200,000
A sole trader has been fined £200,000 by the UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for sending nearly one million spam text messages to people in debt.
The messages, sent by Bharat Singh Chand, promoted "debt solutions" and "energy-saving grants" using a "SIM farm" capable of sending thousands of texts quickly.
Many of the spam messages made promises to "freeze interest and charges" or "write off debts."
- The spam campaign targeted people at greater risk of harm, particularly those facing financial hardship.
- Recipients who replied "YES" to the SMS message were called back by individuals pretending to work for "The Debt Relief Team."
The fine, equivalent to US $260,000, was levied for the operation that targeted vulnerable individuals.
