Universities urge: "we can’t leave education to political leaders"

Universities Urge Neutrality in Education

Universities must remain neutral and come together under heightened political pressure, a conference has heard.

“Politics is for short-term cycles, education is for the long-term,”

said Baroness Usha Prashar, an independent member of the UK House of Lords, speaking at the Reinventing Higher Education conference 2025 in London.

Prashar urged university leaders to think creatively to preserve core values and not get "buffeted by the political pressures of the day".

The US is a current example of education under political pressure, with the Trump administration attempting to reshape American higher education.

Author's summary: Universities must stay neutral.
