Recommendations for Pediatric Patients With Tracheostomies

HealthDay News reports that recommendations have been developed for the management of pediatric patients with tracheostomies.

A clinical practice guideline published online on October 22 in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine outlines the management recommendations.

Reshma Amin, MD, and colleagues from the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, developed the recommendations, which incorporate the best evidence on diagnostic tools and care protocols.

A multidisciplinary panel with expertise in pediatric tracheostomy care contributed to the recommendations, which include a strong recommendation for applying ethical principles to guide shared decision-making regarding tracheostomy placement.

The guideline recommends tracheal aspirate cultures to guide antibiotic therapy, but not for routine surveillance.

Applying ethical principles to guide shared decision-making regarding tracheostomy placement is strongly recommended.
