Ian Fogarty, a Nassau County police officer, was recognized for rescuing two teens caught in a riptide at Cupsogue Beach County Park on July 16.
Fogarty was visiting the park with his family when he saw two 16-year-olds struggling in the water about 100 yards offshore. Using a boogie board, he swam out to help them and safely guided them back to shore.
“It just looked like it was something that could go wrong very quickly,”
recalled Fogarty, 38. The Nassau County Legislature honored Fogarty for his “selfless valor” and named him its “Top Cop” for September.
