Hull KR CEO Explains World Club Challenge Venue Switch

Paul Lakin, CEO of Hull KR, has explained why the World Club Challenge will be held at the home stadium of their rivals, Hull FC. Despite the rivalry, Lakin emphasizes that the priority was always to keep the event in Hull and welcomes Hull FC fans to the MKM Stadium to support the Brisbane Broncos.

The Robins will host the much-anticipated match between the two top rugby league clubs at the MKM Stadium rather than Craven Park. This decision, according to Lakin, is financially sound and meets the expected high demand from supporters of both teams.

Initially, Elland Road was considered as an alternative venue, but it was quickly dismissed. Craven Park's limited capacity made it impossible to host such a significant event, leaving the MKM Stadium across the city as the only viable option.

“It was really important for people to try to retain it in the city. It’s a huge rugby league city and it’ll be fantastic for us to keep it in Hull."
“It was very quickly a no-brainer that we needed to move it. Financial reasons, supply and demand, it’s the biggest domestic game and you want as many people to experience it as possible. The players we have in our side, they want to play on the biggest stage possible."
“For financial reasons, it (Craven Park) wasn’t viable because we need to support the Broncos coming over here."

Lakin stresses that holding the event in Hull retains the city's rugby league heritage while maximizing attendance and revenue potential.

Summary: Hull KR CEO Paul Lakin highlights financial and logistical reasons for moving the World Club Challenge to Hull FC’s MKM Stadium, aiming to keep the event local and accessible to rugby league fans.
