Canon announced the new EOS R6 Mark III, designed with a form factor more suitable for still photography while retaining strong video capabilities. This model follows the R6 Mark II released just over three years ago, with the original R6 debuting in July 2020.
The EOS R6 Mark III features the same 32MP 3:2 full-frame sensor found in the EOS C50, an upgrade from the 24.2MP CMOS sensor of the R6 Mark II. Unlike the EOS C80 and C400, it does not incorporate a Dual Gain Output (DGO) or a back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor.
Notably, the R6 Mark III and C50 lack a Back Illuminated Stacked sensor found in other Canon models such as the C80, C400, and R3. This technology is often used to enhance autofocus performance.
The camera is powered by the DIGIC DV 7 processor, shared across the EOS C50, C80, C400, C500 Mark II, and C300 Mark III models.
“It’s interesting to see that the R6 Mark III and C50 don’t feature a Back Illuminated Stacked sensor like the C80 and C400, and R3. One of the reasons a lot of companies are now utilizing back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensors is that they allow for better AF performance.”
Overall, the EOS R6 Mark III balances high-resolution still shooting with advanced video options, leveraging proven Canon sensor and processor technologies.
Canon's EOS R6 Mark III delivers significant sensor and video updates, maintaining versatility for both photographers and videographers.
