David Lammy, standing in for Keir Starmer in the House of Commons, began the session with a solemn tribute to those who fought to protect freedom. However, it soon became clear that he was not wearing a poppy, a common symbol worn by most MPs ahead of Remembrance Sunday.
About 15 minutes into Prime Minister's Questions, Lammy, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, was handed a poppy pin by his cabinet colleague Bridget Phillipson to correct the oversight.
Responding to Tory MP Bob Blackman, Lammy explained the reason for the poppy mishap:
"I bought a new suit this morning because my Godmother said she would be watching."
He expressed gratitude to Ms. Phillipson:
"I am very grateful to Bridget Phillipson for ensuring that despite wearing a new suit I have managed to put my poppy on."
Kevin Hollinrake, Conservative Party chairman, criticized Lammy's conduct at PMQs:
"It was a disgrace that Mr Lammy had stood in for Sir Keir at PMQs while not wearing a poppy."
David Lammy's failure to wear a Remembrance poppy during a key parliamentary session sparked embarrassment and criticism, highlighting the symbolic importance of the gesture ahead of Remembrance Sunday.
