I Self-Host My RSS Feed Reader, and It's Much Better Than Feedly

Simple, functional, and personalized RSS feed readers remain one of the most effective ways to follow the news you care about. Despite many technological advances, nothing surpasses the simplicity and efficiency of an RSS feed aggregator, which is why almost every news website still offers an RSS feed (including XDA).

There are many feed aggregators available, with Feedly being arguably the most popular. However, I’m not a fan of Feedly’s user experience or that of many modern news aggregators. Instead, I prefer running my own RSS reader, which is entirely feasible.

Discovering Miniflux

I recently started using Miniflux, and it quickly became my favorite tool to stay updated with the news. Setting it up was straightforward, making it a convenient solution for tracking the news that matters to me.

I installed Miniflux on TrueNAS. The process was simple, though specific steps may vary depending on your hosting platform. Using the TrueNAS Scale Apps section, I searched for Miniflux and configured it with a username and password.

To retain control over my data, I created a dedicated dataset to store Miniflux's information. The app itself is lightweight and deployed fast.

Managing Feeds

Once I logged into the Miniflux web interface, I easily imported an OPML file containing feeds I follow regularly, making the setup process smooth and practical.

"Simple, functional, and mine RSS feed readers are the most effective way to stay on top of the news you want."
"Setting up Miniflux is incredibly easy, which already makes it a great solution for keeping on top of news you care about."

Miniflux offers a streamlined, user-controlled alternative to popular aggregators, enhancing both usability and privacy.
