PH Prepares as Typhoon Uwan Approaches, Tino Death Toll Rises

The Philippines is bracing for Typhoon Uwan, internationally known as Fung-wong, even as recovery efforts continue in areas devastated by Typhoon Tino, which claimed at least 188 lives across several provinces.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), Uwan is currently a severe tropical storm and is expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by Friday evening or early Saturday. Once inside PAR, it is forecast to strengthen rapidly and could reach super typhoon intensity by Saturday evening or Sunday morning.

“Uwan may be as strong as Typhoon Pepito, which stayed within PAR for three days and 15 hours with winds up to 195 km/h, causing P266 million in agricultural losses in Central and Northern Luzon in November 2024,” PAGASA reported.

Authorities are closely monitoring Central and Northern Luzon as potential landfall areas. Meanwhile, rescue and recovery operations continue following Typhoon Tino’s destruction.
