Firefighters Battle Derelict Building Fire in Newquay

A fire broke out at a derelict building in Newquay at around 3:18am.

Following a similar fire at the Narrowcliff Hotel in July, Cllr Joanne Kenny stated that the council has limited powers over privately owned properties but can take action if they are deemed unsafe or unsightly.

"The risks arising from these closed and privately owned buildings was highlighted at the last Town Council meeting – and I have liaised with Cornwall Council management to see if we could restore the special team we had when Newquay was plagued before by a host of derelict buildings, almost exactly 10 years ago."

Cllr Kenny had already planned to request the reinstatement of the Derelict Buildings working party and the Cornwall Council team at the August Town Council meeting. This recent fire is expected to add urgency to the matter in both councils.
