A family and community are rallying to support Mohamed Shama, a North Carolina man from Egypt, after he was detained by immigration officials during a routine hearing in Durham on October 9.
Shama, who has worked with the AMC theater chain for eight years and was awarded General Manager of the Year, was taken to Stewart Detention Center in Lumpkin, Georgia. His supporters claim he has "worked tirelessly" to reobtain legal status following his divorce from his first wife but has been "trapped in a web of bureaucratic red tape."
He has been recognized by Durham Mayor Steve Schewel for hiring people with special needs.
A GoFundMe campaign has been created to support Shama, raising over $44,000. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) provided more details, stating: "He entered the U.S. on a B2-tourist visa that required him to depart the U.S."
