Martin Scorsese, one of the greatest directors of all time, is the subject of a new documentary about his career.
In 1995, Scorsese made A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, a nearly four-hour film that explored the history of American cinema.
He believed that American film was almost entirely a director’s medium and that was his focus: the director as storyteller, the director as illusionist, the director as smuggler and the director as iconoclast.
This film was part of a global celebration of 100 years of motion pictures, which also included the New Zealand entry, Cinema of Unease, by Sam Neill.
Scorsese's work was a staggering example of cinema scholarship, offering startling observations and remarkable illustrations that changed the way the author looked at movies.
